Copy of Your Tax Return - How to Get One

This is archived information that pertains only to the 2000 Tax Year. If you
are looking for information for the current tax year, go to the Tax Prep Help Area.

If you need an exact copy of a previously filed and processed return you must file Form 4506, Request for Copy or Transcript of Tax Form. The fee is $23.00 for each tax period requested. There is no charge for transcripts or W-2's. Beginning in 2000, there is a $37.00 fee for all non-program copies of W2's. Non-program copies include Civil Court Cases, Proof of Residency, and State Tax Returns. It can take up to 60 calendar days to get a copy of a tax return or W-2. For additional information on obtaining W-2's, see Topic 154. Form 4506 can also be used to obtain proof from the IRS that you did not file a return (check box 8B). Forms can be [downloaded] or ordered by calling 1-800-829-3676.

A Tax Return Transcript is available only for returns in the 1040 series, such as, Form 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and so forth. It is not a photocopy of your 1040 but it will show line items from your original return. In most cases a transcript will meet the requirement for lending institutions for purposes of student loans, etc. It takes about 10 work days (after the IRS receives your request) to get a transcript.

If you need a "statement" of your tax account showing changes that you or the IRS made to the original return, request "Tax Account Information". To request "Tax Account Information," which shows payments and later tax adjustments or "Tax Return Transcript," write or visit an IRS office or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
