Thousands of Taxpayers Due Refunds

WASHINGTON - Over 96,400 taxpayers have yet to receive their 1995 refund checks according to the Internal Revenue Service. The undeliverable refunds total over $62 million, an average of $645 per check.

These refund checks were returned by the post office because they were unable to deliver them. Many taxpayers move and do not give IRS their new address and thousands of other refund checks have incorrect names or addresses. If you are due a refund just call the IRS toll-free assistance line listed in your telephone directory or 1-800-829-1040.

The IRS says taxpayers can eliminate the possibility of lost, stolen or undeliverable refunds by electing direct deposit. Commissioner Margaret Milner Richardson said, " This year direct deposit is easier than ever -- just two extra lines to complete on the the tax form." Last year over 10 million taxpayers avoided problems by having their refund checks deposited directly in their accounts. Also, taxpayers can avoid delays in getting their refunds by sending IRS their new address on Form 8822 "Change of Address", when they move.

Although every year there are thousands of refunds which are not delivered, that number is dwarfed by the number of refunds that are delivered. Last filing season almost 79 million refunds in the average amount of $1,227 were delivered.
