Signing Your Return With A Self-Select PIN

This is archived information that pertains only to the 2001 Tax Year. If you
are looking for information for the current tax year, go to the Tax Prep Help Area.

The Self-Select PIN is a five-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) you create to sign your individual income tax return electronically. The PIN can only be used by taxpayers who file electronically using tax preparation software or through a tax professional who is an Authorized IRS e-file Provider. In addition to your name and Social Security Number, you will need to provide the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from your prior year tax return and your correct date of birth to authenticate your identity. Because the date of birth you provide will be matched against Social Security Administration (SSA) records, prior to filing, you should check with SSA, www.ssa.gov, to ensure they have an accurate date of birth for you on file. For more information on the Self-Select PIN or on IRS e-file, please visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov and click on "Electronic Services".
