If you are starting or already have a small business and need information on taxes or record keeping, help is available and much of the assistance is free. The service is called Small Business Tax Education Program or STEP. It helps people learn about record keeping, accounting practices, completing federal business and employment tax returns, and meeting other federal tax obligations. The program also provides general information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of business entities, such as, sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations.

The materials are designed so small business owners, new entrepreneurs, and self-employed individuals can learn about business tax topics that apply to their own business situation.

This comprehensive, small business education program is available through workshops, seminars, and in-depth tax courses offered by many community colleges, business information centers, small business development centers, business associations, and the IRS. If you are thinking about starting a business, hiring employees, or are having a difficult time understanding your tax rights and responsibilities as a small business owner, new entrepreneur or self-employed individual, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and ask for the Taxpayer Education Coordinator in the IRS office closest to you.

You can find out more about this program by completing the interest form in Publication 1057, Small Business Tax Education Program Brochure and mailing it to the nearest IRS Taxpayer Education Coordinator. In addition, the IRS has assembled Publication 454, Your Business Tax Kit, which contains various forms and publications for persons in business or for those starting a business. Publications and forms can be downloaded from this site or ordered by calling 1-800-829-3676.
