Copy of Your Tax Return - How to Get One

This is archived information that pertains only to the 1998 Tax Year. If you
are looking for information for the current tax year, go to the Tax Prep Help Area.

If you need an exact copy of a previously filed, and processed return, you must file Form 4506. For copies, there is a $25.00 fee for each tax period requested. For transcripts or W-2's, there is no charge.

A Tax Return Transcript is available only for returns in the 1040 series (Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, etc.). It shows line items from the original return. In most cases, a transcript will meet the requirement for lending institutions, for purposes of student loans, etc. It takes about 10 work days (after the IRS receives your request) to get a transcript. It can take up to 60 calendar days to get a copy of a tax return or W-2's.

For additional information on obtaining W-2's, select Topic 154. Form 4506 can also be used to get proof from the IRS that you did not file a return. Check box 8B. Publications and forms may be downloaded from this site or ordered by calling 1-800-829-3676.

If you need a statement of your tax account showing changes that you or the IRS made to the original return, request a Tax Account Transcript. To request a Tax Account Transcript which shows payments and later tax adjustments, write or visit an IRS office or call the IRS number listed in your telephone directory.
