Last year, millions of taxpayers sent their tax returns to IRS electronically. Filing your return electronically is faster, safer, and more accurate than mailing your tax return, because it is transmitted over telephone lines directly to an IRS computer.

Electronic filing is available whether you prepare your own return or use a tax preparer. However, to file electronically, you must go through an IRS approved preparer, transmitter or other company. You can file electronically whether you owe money or are due a refund. If you file a complete and accurate return electronically, you will usually get your refund within 21 days. With electronic filing, you may also have the convenience and safety of direct deposit. And, the IRS acknowledges receipt of your return.

In many states, you may be able to file your state return electronically with your Federal tax return. Check with your tax return preparer or transmitter. To find a tax professional to file your return electronically, look in your local telephone directory or get a recommendation from someone you know who has used electronic filing.

Many companies also offer electronic filing as a benefit for their employees. Check with your employer.

You can also file your return electronically with a computer, tax software and modem. There are some On-Line service providers and transmitters that can accept your tax return electronically. Check with your on-line service provider or check your tax preparation software package to see if you can file electronically with them.

This year, many taxpayers will receive a special TeleFile tax package that allows them to file their taxes electronically by phone. TeleFile is easy, fast, and available 24 hours a day, with nothing to mail in. For additional information on TeleFile, refer to Topic 255.
