National Problem Solving Day Set for May 15,
Special Outreach for the Small Business Community

WASHINGTON - In its continuing effort to help taxpayers understand and meet their tax responsibilities, the Internal Revenue Service, has set Saturday, May 15 as the next National Problem Solving Day. At 37 locations across the country, taxpayers will have an opportunity to work directly with IRS experts to solve their long-standing tax problems.

In addition, the IRS is placing special emphasis on reaching out to small business for this upcoming National Problem Solving Day. The 40 million small businesses and self-employed individuals in the United States are responsible for nearly 40 percent of all income tax collected. These taxpayers frequently have more complex tax issues than other taxpayers.

“I know personally the challenges of operating a small business. The Internal Revenue Service wants to work cooperatively with small businesses to determine how we can help them meet their tax obligations and solve their problems,” said Charles Rossotti, Commissioner of Internal Revenue.

The IRS' Problem Solving Day Program began in November 1997. Since then, over 46,000 taxpayers have been helped through the program in person and most have given the program high marks. “We are pleased people have responded so positively to the chance to work one-on-one with IRS employees to solve nagging problems,” said Commissioner Rossotti.

Taxpayers can find the National Problem Solving Day location nearest them on the IRS home page on the World Wide Web http://www.irs.gov or by calling the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-1040.

Taxpayers unable to obtain a prompt resolution of problems through normal IRS channels can call the Problem Resolution Program hotline at 1-877-777-4778. A list of National Problem Solving Day locations and times is attached.
