IRS Extends Phone Help Hours

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service tax help lines -- already available from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm each weekday -- will be open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on the next three Saturdays, the final weekends before the April 17 filing deadline. The IRS is offering these extra hours especially for taxpayers who have questions about completing their 1994 tax returns.

As of March 18, the IRS had answered about 45 million calls this filing season to both its live assistance and automated lines, bringing the total this fiscal year to 50 million.

On the "live" lines, IRS representatives answer callers' tax questions or help them resolve account matters, such as bills or payments. The toll-free number to call is 1-800-829-1040.

The automated system -- Tele-Tax -- offers taped messages on about 140 tax subjects as well as refund information for taxpayers who have filed their returns. The taped messages are available 24 hours a day. Refund information is generally available from 7:00 am to 11:30 pm weekdays. Details on using Tele-Tax, including a list of recorded topics, are in the IRS tax instruction booklets. The toll-free number is 1-800-829-4477.
