Tax Exemption for
Hurricane Andrew Relief Organizations

Organizations formed to aid victims of Hurricane Andrew will have their applications for tax exemption processed quickly by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS said that these organizations should clearly mark "Hurricane Andrew" on the top of the application for tax exemption.

Donors may claim a tax deduction for contributions they make to tax exempt charitable organizations that use the contributions to provide relief to Hurricane Andrew victims.

IRS explained that organizations seeking tax exempt status should file Form 1023, "Application for Recognition of Tax Exemption." Additional information is contained in free IRS publication 557, "Tax Exempt Status for Your Organization." The application form and publication may be ordered by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM.
