Filing Alternatives Continued to Grow

WASHINGTON - The 1994 filing season saw a record number of electronic returns, a successful expansion of telephone filing and the initial test of home computer users filing returns through an on-line service.

As of April 22, the Internal Revenue Service had received 103.6 million returns, 13.4 million of them electronically. This is over one million more than last year's electronic return total. Taxpayers may file electronically until August 15, the deadline for those who requested automatic extensions.

TeleFile, IRS' file-by-phone system, brought in 519,000 returns form the seven states where taxpayers could use it. The IRS expects to announce its 1995 TeleFile plans this summer.

A test of home computer filings in nine states brought in a few hundred returns. The IRS hopes to expand this test nationwide next year, with several on-line services participating.

As of April 22, the IRS had sent out nearly 56 million refunds, worth $57 billion. At $1,026, the average refund is $47 higher than at this time last year.
